Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a low-volume, one-on-one grooming experience look like?
Hot Dogs Grooming operates as a low-volume, one-on-one style salon. Each groomer works with one dog at a time, providing focused, individualized care.
We do not use kennels or an assembly-line approach. While there may be brief overlap with one or two other dogs in the space, every dog is groomed start-to-finish by their groomer in a calm, controlled environment.
How long will my dog’s grooming appointment take?
Grooming time varies based on your dog’s size, coat condition, behaviour, and service type. As a general guideline, appointments take 2–3 hours for small to medium breeds and 3–5 hours for large to giant breeds. Timing may vary depending on the dog, and we will send a text approximately 30 minutes before your dog is ready for pick-up.
How often should my dog be groomed?
Grooming frequency depends on coat type, length, and maintenance at home.
-
Long-haired breeds with longer styles: 4–6 weeks
-
Shorter haircut styles: 6–8 weeks
-
Double-coated and short-coated breeds: 6–12 weeks
Regular grooming helps maintain coat & skin health, comfort, and prevents matting.
When should my puppy have their first groom?
Puppies can begin grooming once they have received all necessary vaccinations, typically between 2–4 months of age.
We recommend starting with a Bath and Tidy to gently introduce grooming procedures. Early positive experiences help build confidence and establish a calm, lifelong relationship with grooming.
Do you de-matt dogs?
We aim to minimize de-matting, as it can be uncomfortable for dogs and may create a negative association with grooming.
Each appointment includes up to 15 minutes of brushing, during which minor matting may be addressed. Additional de-matting is charged at $1 per minute, if your dog is comfortable continuing.
In cases of severe matting or pelting, a shave-down may be required to ensure your dog’s comfort and safety. Removal of matting and/or pelting is also charged at $1 per minute.
Can I stay with my dog during their grooming appointment?
We do not allow owners to remain during grooming appointments. This helps maintain a safe, calm, and focused environment for both dogs and groomers.
Dogs are often more distracted when owners are present, which can increase stress and risk of injury. Independent appointments help build confidence and support a positive grooming experience.
What is your cancellation policy?
We require a minimum of 48 hour notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged 50% of the scheduled service.
No-shows—missed appointments without notice—will be charged the full grooming fee.
As a low-volume grooming salon, missed appointments significantly impact our schedule and availability. Repeated cancellations or no-shows may affect future booking eligibility. Exceptions may be made in the case of emergencies at our discretion.
What is your late policy?
Punctuality is important in a one-on-one grooming environment to maintain a smooth schedule for all clients.
We ask that clients arrive neither early nor late. Arriving more than 15 minutes late may result in a $15 late fee, and in some cases, the appointment may need to be rescheduled if it impacts other bookings.
This applies to both drop-off and pick-up times.
Can my dog receive a haircut without a bath?
No. A thorough bath and complete drying process are essential for a safe, hygienic, even, and professional groom.
Do you express anal glands?
We do not perform anal gland expression as part of our grooming services. Our focus is on external coat and hygiene care, while internal health-related procedures are best handled by a veterinarian.
If your dog requires anal gland care, we recommend consulting your veterinarian for safe and appropriate treatment.
aRE YOU INSURED?
Yes. Hot Dogs Grooming is fully insured through PROFur Pet Groomers Insurance.
This coverage is in place to ensure the safety and protection of both your pet and our business, giving you added peace of mind during your dog’s grooming experience.
